For our local library's summer reading program, kids were able to enter their name for a prize drawing every time they finished a book. Both Ramona and Mika must have entered their names about thirty times by the end of the summer. Ramona was lucky enough to have her name drawn for one of the prizes, which was to ride on a golf cart with the library mascot for a Labor Day Parade in Windsor. She was thrilled to hear the news. This was a big deal for her, as she has never even been to a live parade before (unless you count the 4th of July bicycle parade in our neighborhood, which is not exactly on the same scale).
Here she is with Page the Pelican before the start of the parade:
And we're off! I walked along behind the golf cart as Ramona's chaperone.Forest, Mika, Paula, and Wylie found a spot to camp out and watch the parade.
Several kids in the crowd were very excited to see the giant bird on the golf cart, but often mistook her for an eagle, duck, or chicken. "It's a pelican!" Ramona was frequently shouting by the end of the route.
After the parade, we both got to sit on the back of the golf cart to get a ride back to our car.
Once we got home, the girls got to take one last trip to the neighborhood pool before it closed for the season. Happy Labor Day to us!
